The goddess Pomona, patroness of fruit and fruit-bearing trees, is the ruling deity of the month of September. This is the Irish month of Mean Fomhair. Its Anglo-Saxon name was Haligmonath, "holy month". This is rather paradoxical, as the first part of the month, has significantly fewer scared festivals than most other months do. To the Franks it was Witumanoth, "wood month" in which wood was gathered in advance of approaching winter. To modern Asatru, it is month of Shedding. The backwoods moon of September is the Harvest Moon.
The Celtic tree-calendar month of Col ends on September 1. From September 2 until September 29 is the vine month of Muin, sacred to the god Lugh with "variegated" colours. Gort begins September 30. This is the ivy month, sacred to the goddess Brigid with the colour of sky blue. The month of Gort is a time for the development of the self, a period when one can see beyond the everyday world to that which lies within and beyond. It symbolizes the spiral ascent of the spirit from the plane of Abted (the material world) to Gwynvyd (the world of enlightenment). The goddess calendar month of Hesperis runs until September 5th, giving way to the month of Mala on September 6.
The stone for Septmebr is sapphire.
"A maiden born when rustling leaves
Are blowing in the September breeze,
A Sapphire on her brow should bind,
'till cure disease of the mind"
September is most notable for containing the autumnal equinox, the Mabon of Celtic tradition, the Alban Elfed of the Druids and the Winter Finding of the Norse. Moveable days that occur in September (or October) include the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah), Yom Kippur and Simhat Torah. Weather lore for September says that the month is one of extremes. It is able to either dry up wells or break down bridges. "If it be fair on the first day of September, it will remain so at least to the beginning of October". It is said in East Anglian lore that there are three very windy days during the mid-September Barleysel (barley harvest). These are the equinotical storms associated with the period.
"September blow soft, till the fruit's in the loft" is the spell against potential wind-borne disaster during the fruit of the is month.

The Gastown Business Improvement Society together with The Vancouver Foundation, ParkingSpot.ca, MCL Motor Cars, Salt Tasting Room, The Irish Heather and The Lamplighter, The First Weekend Club, and Videomatica are sponsoring Gastown’s first Drive-In Movie on the roof-top of the Gastown parkade.
The Drive-In Movies will be held on three consecutive Wednesdays in September - September 3rd, 10th and 17th.
The Gastown Drive-in - Drive, Walk or Bike-in to a free roof top movie theatre.
The drive-in movie, a classic form of entertainment, is facing extinction with the rise of land prices and competing forms of electronic entertainment. At the same time, Vancouver has become the third-largest film production centre in North America, albeit usually as Hollywood’s stand-in for another city. As novelist Douglas Coupland wrote in City of Glass: “To be blunt, many Vancouverites feel damn pimpy about the fact that we never get to be our own city in any of these movies.”
The Gastown Drive-in pays homage to Vancouver with a contemporary spin on a nostalgic experience. For three consecutive Wednesday evenings in September 2008, the roof level of the EasyPark parkade in Gastown will transform into a drive-in for both car-equipped and pedestrian audiences in a celebration of BC films. The theme of the film series is “Vancouver Stars As Itself”. Selected shorts and feature films that have been shot in part or wholly within the Metro Vancouver area will showcase the talents of BC filmmakers. The provocative venue for the film series is an enticement to draw in new and broader audiences, and prompts us to re-imagine the city’s functional infrastructure as a social and cultural resource.
To wrap up the evening, after the screening, audience members are invited to meet the filmmakers at an informal gathering in Gastown.
At the end of the series, Cineworks will host a “Thought on Film” discussion examining how Vancouver is represented on film.
Admission to the screenings is free and accessible to all. (The usual EasyPark evening rate of $6 per car will be in effect.) Reservations for cars are recommended. Reserve a parking spot at info@urbanrepublic.ca
Strong attendance and positive audience feedback will lead to the establishment of the series as an annual event.

Hosted bt Farm Folk/City Folk
Feast of Fields - a gourmet wandering picnic harvest festival - is FarmFolk/CityFolk's annual fundraising event. With a wine glass and linen napkin in hand, you can taste the very best of BC from chefs, vintners, brewers, farmers, and food artisans from across the province. Connections are made between producers and chefs, food producers and consumers, and farm folks and city folks. These connections provide an increased awareness of and appreciation for local food and agriculture. Feast of Fields is a gastronomic journey towards a sustainable, local food system.
History
Feast of Fields is an idea originally crafted by renowned Michael Standlandter. As part of the organization "Knives and Forks," Michael partnered with Jamie Kennedy to create an event that aimed to get sophisticated urbanites out to the farm. In 1994 the Feast of Fields concept crossed the country to Vancouver’s FarmFolk/CityFolk Society. Since 1995, we have organized over a dozen Feasts in the Lower Mainland, on Vancouver Island, and in Sea to Sky country.
FarmFolk/CityFolk is a non-profit society that wants one simple thing: for people to eat local, fresh, seasonal foods, grown using farming practices that contribute to the health of the planet. FarmFolk/CityFolk works with farm and city to cultivate a local, sustainable food system.

Changing of the Seasons Gathering in Temagami
Friday September 13th - Monday September 15th, 2008 - Obabika Lake, Temagami
- Over the weekend of September 13th, Alex Mathias, an Ojibway elder, will host his annual ceremony to mark the fall equinox on his traditional family territory in the Temagami region of Ontario. It will be a weekend of wilderness camping, solidarity and learning about the old-growth forests that make Temagami unique.
- On Saturday there will be a 'Changing of the Seasons' ceremony, guest speakers, a potluck lunch, visits to Spirit Rock, and guided hikes through the old-growth forest. Attendees have the option of participating in group events after the ceremony, exploring the area on their own, or simply enjoying some quiet time on the lake. Other optional activities may include a sweat lodge and tree climbing workshops. There is no structured agenda for the weekend and Sunday is an open day which could include a guided canoe excursion for those who are interested.
- Participants are expected to provide their own food and gear. Earthroots will be renting canoes for people who don't have access to their own and this cost will be shared between the group. Most people will be located at the main campsite on the north end of Obabika Lake where the ceremony will take place. Some basic paddling experience is required.
- Earthroots will be organizing carpools for people located in the GTA (leaving Toronto Friday AM and then heading back from Temagami Monday AM). If you need a ride or you have a vehicle with space for others, let us know. Please be aware that the last stretch of the drive is very rough and slow going (directions will be provided once you have registered).

At
